Around Valentine’s Day it can be difficult to escape all the love hanging in the air – even at the office.  It’s one thing to stress over the unwanted advances of a lusty coworker, and quite another to worry about how you can make an office romance work when you want it to.  Many companies discourage inter-office romance, but when you’re single and surrounded by like-minded individuals for the good part of your day, it’s difficult not to fall for a few office charmers.  So what is the best way to navigate the often complicated office romance?

Be Aware of Company Policy

While dating someone at the office is not illegal, companies have different policies regarding it.  So if you work for an organization that discourages cross-cubicle romance, try to stay below the radar.  If your boss doesn’t care about who you’re bringing home to Mama, you can breathe a little easier, but remain professional regardless.  This means no footsy, kids!

Keep it Out of the Office

To continue, it’s imperative that you keep your relationship out of the office.  It’s unprofessional to be calling out pet names across the conference room table, and it’s even worse to bring your personal disagreements into work.  It also puts those around you in an awkward position, and sets you up for accusations of favoritism.

Consider the Breakup

Before you embark on an intense amorous affair with a fellow employee, consider what the outcome might be if you break up.  Is this person a boss who might hamper your professional growth if you make them sleep out on the couch?  Is this an individual that works under you who might charge you with harassment or favoritism of other workers when you fail to return a box of their favorite DVDs?  Think long and hard about this, and make sure that if you do go through a nasty break up, the two of you can act like adults, at least from 9 to 5.

Watch Your Online Activity

It bears repeating that you can never be too careful when it comes to representing yourself online.  So if you’re trying to keep an office relationship under wraps, be mindful when you set a relationship status on Facebook, post pictures, or write comments.  It’s also wise to make sure you keep everything tasteful in general.  Another important thing to consider is the emails you send throughout the day.  If you are using your work email account to send a message, others in the company may be able to access it.  Be careful what you send to a significant other, avoid sending personal messages through office accounts, and again, keep it tasteful.

Office romance is on the rise, and with good reason.  Who doesn’t like an intelligent, sexy working man or woman?  That’s what we thought.  Just take a few extra precautions, stay professional, and have fun!

On the job circuit, it is important to be yourself and clearly express your experience and ability in a way that will resonate with recruiters.  Sincerity is a critical component of being authentic, however you may need to massage your language to make sure the hiring manager is listening.  Of course you don’t want to deceive a potential employer with a trumped-up version of yourself.  That is very similar to padding your resume – a definite no-no in the world of successful job seekers. What you must do to ensure a receptive audience is to say all the right things – in the right way.

1.  Use the Language of Results.

Most CEOs are interested in how your behavior and enthusiasm can help the company move toward specific goals and objectives. An effective strategy includes researching the company for new initiatives, pet projects, or even community involvement and aligning your key work experiences with the activities receiving corporate attention.  Critical information will provide the frame for presenting your skills to the employer. Highlight strengths and experiences that parallel the business intelligence gathered in your research efforts.

Tailor your presentation to garner extra attention from a hiring manager.  Interest may be generated from shared efforts on a community project, HR committee work on social events (translates to improved morale in the language of the CEO), or attending city council meetings on zoning issues (the Division Manager will see you as a trusted representative of the company, as well as a Subject Matter Expert on community relations and regulations).

2.  Verbalize How You Get Things Done.

Gather several sample job descriptions for plum positions and study them for skill areas emphasized.  Sure, every position will share some basic skills that form the core of that profession, but each company has unique expectations within a specific corporate culture.  Compare the job descriptions with your personal work history, not just in terms of basic qualifications, but also in terms of added-value you bring to the table from your personality, extensive contacts, or significant accomplishments. Help the hiring manager understand how you will enhance the team’s functioning, levels of productivity, or bottom line when you deliver your significant skill set.

3.  Listen for Clues.

Many companies share an idiosyncratic language that reflects the corporate mission. Listen to how individuals talk and write.  By identifying trends, such as “do you see what I’m talking about” or “I hear what you’re saying”, you have tapped into clues about how individuals understand the world around them.  Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) suggests mirroring the language of those around you helps to create a bond of shared vision and direction. You will make a solid connection.

4.  Utilize Action Words.

Using powerful language conveys your individual influence and authority. It is not necessary to be in a position of authority to communicate that type of strength to others. When job-seeking, you may feel as though you are an underdog in interactions, but this is the time to step up your game and project your confidence and competence. Action words are a great way to do so. Your list of accomplishments may include “projects executed”, “costs contained”, or “profits accelerated”.

5.  Express Professional Passion.

Passion ignites interest. Define your professional passion by listing all the career-related activities that excite you. Don’t be afraid to express those professional passions by talking about what energizes you. Enthusiasm is contagious and most employers are drawn to candidates who are energized about the profession, their company, or the mere possibility of making a well-defined contribution. Whether you are a dreamer or a doer, you have specific skills to offer – get excited and don’t be shy about sharing.

6.  Incorporate Nonverbal Messages.

Remember the power of body language in addition to all other types of communication. Pay attention to your nonverbal messages as well as those of the hiring manager. In any face-to-face interactions, use the basics of good eye contact, a firm handshake, and an open stance.  If the body language of the other person doesn’t seem as open, try engaging him/her in conversation that is appropriately upbeat. If you are in the office, pay attention to objects on the desk for clues to possible conversation starters – a favorite sports team or plaque of recognition. Over the phone or email, introduce your interest in a special corporate project.

Put these secrets to work and you will be communicating with prospective employers at many different levels. Being able to effectively match the hiring manager’s communication style in multiple ways maximizes a sense of connection and shared vision. Speaking the same language helps the prospective employer see you as part of the team, getting you a few steps closer to landing that plum position!

At times, getting your resume in front of the eyes of a hiring manager can be such a challenge, that when you finally hear back and receive an interview, it can feel like you’ve practically gotten the job.  You enthusiastically prepare for the big day, and when it comes, all seems to go well.  But later on you receive another correspondence telling you that you just didn’t quite make the cut.  So what went wrong?  Here are a few reasons you may not have gotten the job, despite a seemingly great interview.

Apparent Lack of Interest in the Actual Job

You may be sitting there thinking, “There’s no way I showed any shortage of interest during that job interview, I was exuding enthusiasm for that position.”  While that may be true, if hiring managers sense that you’re extremely keen on getting any job, not specifically the one they’re offering, they may decide to pass on you.  They want to ensure that you have a genuine interest in joining their company in this role, to know that you are a great fit and will do the job well.  If your interviewers perceive that you are anxious to land whatever job comes along, they might assume that you aren’t particularly interested in what they have to offer.  Counter this assumption by asking relevant questions during the interview, and by speaking intelligently about the position.

Someone Within the Company Filled the Role

Sometimes, in the midst of the hiring process, a candidate who already works for the company will come along. Or a current employee of the company will refer a friend for the open position.  Unfortunately, no matter how well you hit it off with the hiring manager during the interview, the company is more likely to go with a candidate who already works within the organization and knows the ropes; or a candidate that another colleague vouched for.  While there isn’t much you can do when this happens, try to nip this problem in the bud by networking with individuals in the company beforehand, so that you have a leg up as well.

The Job Description Changed

This tends to happen more with newly created positions.  As hiring managers are interviewing candidates and determining the logistics of the new position, they sometimes realize that the duties or qualifications required for the job may have changed.  While you may have been the ideal candidate at the time you interviewed, it’s possible that the job description changed even a few days later.  Again, there is not much you can do here, but if you know that you are interviewing for a new position, stress your ability to learn and adapt quickly, and your eagerness to catch up in the areas where you may be lacking a bit.

Don’t take it personally when a great interview doesn’t turn into a job.  Chances are, you will never really know the exact reason why you were not selected.  The best you can do is to take what you can from the experience, brush off the loss, and move on to the next opportunity!

Being successful at work is about more than just your own personal achievements at a company – it’s about working well together with others.  After all, this is how you contribute to the success of a company, which is the whole reason you are there.  And being a team player at work is about more than just collaborating on projects (this is, after all, your job), it’s also about your attitude and the gestures you make to convey that you’re a part of the team.  Integrate a few of the following pointers into your routine in order to collaborate more with your fellow workers.

Volunteer for Projects

There are always those projects that will come up at work that require a few more helping hands.  So even if said project doesn’t exactly fall under your job description, offer to help out if the team needs some extra manpower.  You’ll really help out your coworkers, people will appreciate your efforts, and you might learn something new that can help you out in your own work.

Offer to Help a Coworker

If you sense that a coworker is falling behind on their work or that they’re going to be staying late that evening working on a big project, ask them if there’s anything you can do to lighten the load.  It’s often better for the company if the project is finished more quickly, and you may help that coworker catch something that they might have missed in the anxiety of tackling such a large task in the first place.

Go to Lunch

Some people like to use their lunch breaks as a chance to run errands, catch up on emails or phone calls, or get away from the office for an hour; but make it a point at least once a week or a few times a month to sit down and talk with your coworkers over a meal.  You may find that the peers who are high-strung throughout the rest of the day are really neat people during their down time when they aren’t thinking of the work at hand.

Take Part in Company Activities

Whether it’s a potluck, a birthday celebration, or an office contest, try to get involved in company activities when these come up.  If your office is part of a recreational softball league but you just aren’t athletic, show your support by cheering on your coworkers from the stands.  Taking part in the extracurricular activities of your office makes work more enjoyable for you, as well as endears you more to your coworkers, who may work more productively with you as a result.

Not everyone is a natural socialite, but even if you are shy or new to the company, there are still ways to be a team player.  Ultimately, your coworkers will appreciate your efforts, and will reach out to you more as a result.

When asked about their networking strategies, many people will talk about attending happy hours or industry-specific mixers in order to make contacts.  Or they’ll mention that they’ve reached out to family, friends, and old classmates to help them track down job leads.  But there are a few important networking opportunities that job seekers often miss, either because they feel these might be too awkward to use, or because they simply don’t think of these in the first place.  Here are 3 opportunities for networking that every job seeker should consider:

The Company Website

Nothing like going straight to the source.  As many well know, the best way to secure a job is to know someone on the inside.  You may have sent out hundreds of resumes in response to online postings, but heard nothing.  Indeed, this isn’t all that unusual, as many of these positions have already been filled, or the hiring manager might have received thousands of responses.  Instead, try tracking down a few names and email addresses on the company website, and establish a rapport with someone.  Try to ask a specific question about the job you’re interested in, and ask that person to refer you to the individual in charge of hiring for that position – that is, the person who will be making the decision regarding the job, not the HR department.  If there isn’t a position to be filled at the moment, at least you’ll be among the first to know when one opens up.

Professional Networking Sites

Don’t be afraid to hit up your LinkedIn network.  Conduct a search based on companies you are interested in, and reach out to people who come up.  People place their profiles on these websites to network, so don’t hesitate to do just that.  Browse through your connections’ contacts as well, and see if there is anyone you can talk to.  The worst someone can do is ignore you or tell you they’re not interested in speaking, in which case you’ve lost nothing.  Follow the advice from above, and start engaging people from your extended network in conversations.

The Guy on the Street

You never know whom you might meet when you start a conversation with a friendly stranger – and you never know whom they might know.  Disregard what your mother told you and talk to everyone!  The guy serving you coffee, the lady cutting your hair, people in line at the post office – the individuals around you every day, especially the ones in the service industry who interact with a lot of people already, know others who just might help you land your next job.  Don’t be a pest, but don’t hesitate to bring up your job search if the moment is right.

It’s important to continually remind yourself of the importance of networking when trying to secure your next job.  Bear in mind, too, that when you start networking in new and creative ways, you’re bound to see some great results!
